Government Schemes Supporting Cow Breeding and Organic Farming in India

Government Schemes Supporting Cow Breeding and Organic Farming in India

India has many different types of native cows and there is a growing movement towards organic farming.

To  help support both, the government has started several important programs that assist with cow breeding, keeping cattle healthy, and promoting organic farming methods.

These initiatives help keep our traditional cows safe, encourage environmentally friendly farming, and improve the income and lives of people living in rural areas.

Government Schemes Supporting Cow Breeding

Top 10 Government Schemes Supporting Cow Breeding and Organic Farming in India:

1. Rashtriya Gokul Mission

This main program is about protecting and bettering native cattle breeds such as Gir, Sahiwal, and Rathi.

It helps Gokul Grams, Integrated Indigenous Cattle Centres, scientific breeding methods, and making organic manure to keep the genetic quality strong and support the farmers who breed these cattle.

2. National Livestock Mission

As part of the larger Livestock Sector development, this program helps improve feed and fodder production, build better infrastructure for livestock, and train farmers.

It also connects cow breeding with sustainable dairy farming methods.

3.  National Animal Disease Control Program (NADCP)

A countrywide initiative to eliminate Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Brucellosis by vaccinating a large number of animals.

This helps keep the animals healthy, increases their productivity, and ensures the well-being of native cattle.

4.  Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS)

This scheme provides capital  financial support in the form of capital subsidies, up to 33% for farmers from SC/ST communities, to help set up dairy businesses, including those based on cattle, which helps promote inclusive cattle farming and adds value to the products in rural areas.

5. Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF)

A 15,000-crore rupees  fund that helps support dairy infrastructure run by private companies and FPOs, including dairy plants, feed units, and other related facilities, to promote investment in livestock and create sustainable livelihoods based on dairy.

6. National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF)

In late 2024, NMNF started a program with ₹2,481 crore to support chemical-free natural farming on 750,000 hectares, helping 10 million farmers move towards organic and sustainable agriculture.

7. Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY)

This cluster-based organic farming program helps farmers by providing them with supplies, training, certification, and branding support.

It offers over ₹31,000 per hectare for three years to promote organic cow feed and crop farming methods.

8. MOVCDNER (Mission Organic Value Chain for North-East)

It is designed for the northeastern region of India, linking farmer producer organizations with organic supply chains.

This includes all steps from growing the crops, getting them certified as organic, processing them, and selling them in the market, all while supporting farming methods that are good for the environment.

9. Godhan Nyay Yojana (Chhattisgarh)

This new government program buys cow dung from farmers and uses it to make vermicompost through women’s groups.

It helps with raising cows, using organic fertilizer, and creating jobs in rural areas.

A new plan focused on 100 agri-districts brings together 36 different programs, such as organic farming, irrigation, and support for livestock, to help agriculture grow in a sustainable way.
